About hardness grades:
Pencil lead is graded based on how hard or soft it is, which comes from the clay-to-graphite ratio. H, F, HB, and B sit around the middle. Softer leads (2B–10B) are great for sketching and darker lines, while harder leads (2H–10H) make lighter, more precise marks. For reference, a standard American #2 pencil is the same as HB. In general, harder pencils make lighter lines, while softer B grades create darker marks and can smudge more easily.
