Description

Elissa grew up and currently lives in New England, and the region’s lush landscapes and changing seasons have made a lasting impact on her work, content, compositions, and color choices. Her current work centers on constructing layered, dimensional collages in response to the motifs and palette of the natural world. She meticulously hand-cuts, paints, and layers archival papers to create depth and movement within her compositions, inviting an interplay between light, shadow, and texture. These works are quietly autobiographical, evoking “remembered landscapes”and marking the passage of seasons, times of day, and significant moments. Elissa lives and works on the North Shore of Boston, where she enjoys experiencing the natural world with her family. Her work is in private and corporate collections across the country.

“A Space to Hold You”
In beginning this series, I was drawn to images of nests, their fiercely organic and embracing shapes, and how repetitive, obsessive action from their makers transforms fragile materials into protective sculptures of shelter. Each collage hints at the nest motif, through soft, rounded compositions and layers of color, both natural and playfully saturated. This series is a reflection on “shelter” and my complex desires as a new parent for my daughter’s safety and freedom.

Description

Wendy Whatley works as a visual designer for a tech company by day and on the side, she explores nature themes, which have roots in her upbringing in the lush woods of Virginia. After some time with watercolor and ceramics, she was inspired to translate that same language into a new medium, paper, which allows her to delve deeper into an abstract space with graphic shapes and textures.

“I was eager to create this second paper series and get further into this medium that I am still exploring and as always, I am drawing inspiration from the outdoors. This round, I decided to add in a contrasting background which highlights the graphic aspects of these elements within these natural compositions.” -WW
