Description
Named for 19th century statesman Nathan Macon,Fort Macon highlights American attempts to defend coastal regions using Frenchinnovations in fortification. The irregular pentagonal fort displayed could bearmed on three sides to defend against naval and land attacks, featuredcasements for spare ammo, and was built deep into the ground to thwart earlydetection. During the Civil War era, Unionists defeated occupying Confederateforces after eleven hours of bombardment with siege guns.
