Tasi’s Gift
by Tamara Montgomery, illustrated by Joseph D. Dodd
Tasi’s Gift is a touching story about
Tuala, a young girl who learns the
value of selfless giving from her
grandfather Tasi, with the help of
a surprising assortment of creative
animals. The story is set on Upolu
Island in Samoa at a time long
before the present.
Tasi, the most famous bowl carver
in Samoa, must prepare a kava
bowl beautiful enough for the new
Matai, the Chief of their village,
to be presented at a fiafia, a celebration.
With his granddaughter’s help, he carves a traditional bowl
but is not satisfied with it. After
leaving it overnight in a beachside
fale, he and Tuala discover the
bowl transformed with intricate
carvings suitable for the new chief.
