Life Savers candy was invented in 1912 by Clarence Crane, a Cleveland, Ohio, chocolate manufacturer, as a heat-resistant alternative to chocolate that looked like a miniature life preserver. He sold the rights to the candy to Edward Noble in 1913 for under $3,000, and Noble formed the Mint Prods. Co. to market the candies, which started with the Pep-O-Mint flavor and expanded to other flavors in the following years.
