PEZ candy was created in 1927 in Vienna, Austria, by Eduard HaasIII.  He developed a compressed peppermint mint as a breath freshener and a stylish, healthy alternative to smoking. The name PEZ comes from the German word for peppermint, “PfeffErminZ”The candy’s evolution into the fruity, dispenser-based treat known today involved several key shifts in marketing and product design.In 1948, inventor Oscar Uxa created the first PEZ dispenser. The rectangular dispenser was designed to look like a cigarette lighter and hygienically dispense one mint at a time. In 1955, the company began adding three-dimensional heads of popular characters to the top of the dispensers, transforming it from a simple dispenser into a toy.
